Due to a high number of COVID-19 cases, Shakopee Public Schools is canceling school on Monday and Tuesday.
According to a release, all E-12 students — both in person and virtually — get those days off, in addition to the Wednesday through Friday Thanksgiving break.
"In our district, the three weeks with the most COVID-19 infections per week since the beginning of the pandemic have all occurred this month," the school said. "Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Scott County have also continued to rise in November."
The increase in infections is also affecting student and staff attendance, so the school has already moved three classrooms to distance learning and a number of other classes are "getting close to the threshold."
There will be free "emergency child care" available at Sun Path Elementary for the district Monday and Tuesday. Families must register here. Bus transportation is canceled during that time, but meal pickup is available on Monday.
"The district will continue to monitor the situation, and explore possible additional mitigation steps and school schedule adjustments," the school wrote.
Future steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 may include shifting a four-day in-person schedule and extending the length of winter break.
