Red Wing Fire Department extinguishes fire in extreme cold
Red Wing Fire Department extinguishes a structure fire in the bitter cold on Saturday.
According to fire officials at 11:34 p.m., fire crews responded to a fire on Lakeview Drive in Wacouta.
Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire coming from the roof of a third story residence. All occupants had safely exited the home.
Crews encountered significant difficulties extinguishing the fire due to the extreme outside air temperature of minus 17 degrees and a lack of fire hydrants in the area.
The incident was placed under control at approximately 2 a.m. and crews remained on scene until just after 9 a.m. ensuring the fire was completely extinguished. Two firefighters received minor injuries that did not require hospital evaluation. The fire caused extensive damage to the home, which is left nonhabitable. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Red Wing Fire Department said it appreciates the neighbors’ assistance who provided a location for the firefighters to warm up from the extreme elements.
