Prior Lake driver who crashed and killed 19-year-old passenger in 2018 sentenced

A Prior Lake man, who pleaded guilty after a crash killed his passenger, has been sentenced.

The Dakota County Attorney's Office said 21-year-old James Lapsley was sentenced to four years in prison. Lapsley had THC in his system and was speeding at the time of the crash when he hit the median barrier and went off the road in Burnsville.

The crash happened on Memorial Day weekend in 2018. 

Nineteen-year-old Kaylie Thompson was the passenger killed.

Her father spoke to KSTP at the sentencing.

"It's been almost two years… we'll be searching for peace for a long time," Brandon Thompson said.

Her family adds this was just a tragic accident for everyone involved.
