The St. Cloud Police Department has arrested a man after he threatened several officers with a hatchet.
According to authorities, on Friday at about 11:25 a.m., officers responded to a report of a dispute between a man and woman near the 400 block of 2nd Street SE.
Officers arrived and determined that some property had been damaged and the suspect fled the area on foot. Officers were following the suspect in the neighborhood when he pulled out a hatchet and threatened an officer with it. The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Malique Isiah Shaqur Hanson, from St. Cloud, continued to run through the neighborhood and ultimately threatened several officers with the hatchet, according to the police report.
Hanson was eventually contained by officers in the alley in the 500 block of 5th Avenue Southeast. He was then taken into custody. Hanson was transported to St. Cloud Hospital for medical clearance and will be transported to the Benton County Jail pending charges of second-degree assault, threats of violence, fleeing police on foot and felony property damage.
Area schools and the Target store on Lincoln Avenue were notified during the incident and instituted precautionary security measures for about 15 minutes until the suspect was detained, according to police. Some roadways in the area were also briefly blocked by officers for community safety.
