Off-duty Wisconsin police sergeant arrested after fatal crash

A Wisconsin police officer has been arrested after he was involved in a fatal crash while off-duty.

Hubbard Broadcasting affiliate WDIO-TV reports the crash happened at around 1:15 a.m. Friday in the 5200 block of East Second Street in Superior.

According to police, two vehicles were headed north on Second Street when the trailing vehicle rear-ended the other. The driver of the vehicle that was hit — a 23-year-old man — died and two of the three passengers were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that rear-ended them was off-duty Sgt. Greg Swanson, a 15-year veteran of the Superior Police Department. WDIO reports that Swanson is being held in jail for homicide due to driving under the influence, although formal charges haven’t yet been filed. He was also put on administrative leave by the department.

“This is a sad and tragic incident. We wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased, and our hopes of a speedy and successful recovery for the other occupants involved,” Superior Police Chief Nicholas Alexander said in a statement.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol are handling the investigation.
