Norwood Young America student arrested at school for terroristic threats
Authorities say a student was arrested after he reported his own threat to kill people at a high school in Norwood Young America.
The Carver County Sheriff’s Office says deputies received a tip at around 9 a.m. Wednesday that a student threatened to kill eight or more people at Central High School.
Deputies responded to the school and identified a 17-year-old as the suspect. Officials found the teen at the school and took him into custody.
The school never went into lockdown or early dismissal, law enforcement and school officials say.
Once in custody, the teen admitted to making the threat and filing the tip with the sheriff’s office, the agency said.
Authorities didn’t find any weapons at the school.
“The Carver County Sheriff’s Office investigates these cases thoroughly and vigorously and will pursue prosecution of anyone found to have criminal involvement,” Sheriff Jason Kamerud said in a statement.
The investigation remains active but all reports will be sent to the Carver County Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
Central Public Schools Superintendent Tim Schochenmaier sent the following message to parents:
“A threat to student safety was reported and resolved with no danger to students or staff today.
“This morning, the Carver County Sheriff’s Department arrived on-site based on a tip given to their online tipline. After investigating, they determined there was not a threat to students and recommended business as usual.
“Most students in school are probably not even aware of this incident unless they saw me speaking to the officer. We did not go into lockdown per the recommendation of the Deputy.
“Thank you for your continued assistance in our work together to ensure all students are safe at school.”
