Sheriff: Morrison Co. suspect fatally shot in Iron Range, BCA investigating

Members of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) say they are investigating an officer-involved shooting.

According to the BCA, the shooting happened in Chisholm.

The BCA has not yet provided information on how exactly the officer, or officers, were involved in the shooting, nor has it provided information on the shooting itself.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, multiple deputies, as well as officers from various police departments and Minnesota State Patrol troopers, were searching for a suspect and a vehicle which they say were wanted in a connection to a recent felony level crime in Morrison County at about 4:42 a.m. Wednesday.

The sheriff’s office stated the suspect was believed to be in the Hibbing or Chisholm area at the time, and a deputy found the suspect vehicle at about 7:15 a.m. in Chisholm.

Authorities say the vehicle was unoccupied at the time.

Afterwards, the sheriff’s office reported officers were called to the 200 block of Central Avenue S. in Chisholm, where they made contact with the suspect, and an officer-involved shooting happened.

The suspect – whose name and age have not been released by any agency as of this time – was shot, and died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Details regarding what led up to the shooting have not been released, however, the sheriff’s office states no officers were injured during the incident.

The names of the involved officers have not been released.

The sheriff’s office reports the BCA will determine if squad and body cameras captured the shooting.

Hubbard Broadcasting affiliate WDIO-TV reports crime scene tape could be seen surrounding the area along South Central Avenue. WDIO-TV also reports ambulances from both Chisholm and Hibbing were at the scene, as were state troopers.

In an update Thursday, the BCA reported the investigation remains in very early stages and that additional information is expected in the days to come, following an autopsy and family notification.
