Minneapolis police warn of scammers trying to impersonate officers

The Minneapolis Police Department is reminding residents to not give out personal or financial information over the phone.

MPD says a scammer recently claimed to be a police officer and told the victim that their daughter had been injured in an accident. The scammer then asked the victim to provide personal information about her daughter as a female in the background impersonated the victim’s daughter and begged for help.

The department says the victim refused to give the scammer information and the scammer then called her an expletive and hung up.

MPD says it never will solicit money and said residents can determine if a call from police is legitimate by calling 311 or 612-673-3000, or by emailing Minneapolis311@MinneapolisMN.gov.

Anyone who falls victim to a scam is urged to report it online.
