Minneapolis man charged in fatal high-speed crash near Lowry Avenue Bridge

A Minneapolis man has been charged in connection to a high-speed crash that left one person dead.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, 22-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed Mohamed charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of criminal vehicular operation.

A criminal complaint states Minneapolis police were called to the intersection of Lowry Avenue and Marshall Street, near the Lowry Avenue Bridge, at about 5:20 a.m. on Monday. When they arrived, officers found multiple vehicles had been involved in a crash and a Chevrolet Tahoe was completely engulfed in flames.

The driver of the Tahoe was trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene, authorities said.

Fatal crash forces Lowry Avenue bridge closure early Monday

Witnesses told police they saw Mohamed's silver Honda Accord speeding on Lowry Avenue, and said it then ran a red light and smashed into the Tahoe, the complaint states. The Tahoe and the Accord then spun and struck a Honda Odyssey, which was stopped for a red light at the intersection. The driver of the Odyssey received medical attention for abdominal pain.

The complaint states police followed a blood trail from the Accord to an area behind an adjacent building and found Mohamed. Police said Mohamed suffered multiple injuries but claimed he wasn't in any of the vehicles. Later, he allegedly claimed he was a passenger.

Two passengers in the Accord were also injured but said they didn't know who else was in the car. The complaint states officers found an open bottle of alcohol, a marijuana blunt and an unlabeled pill bottle in the Accord.

The attorney's office said traffic video confirmed Mohamed ran a red light while speeding into the intersection and hit the Tahoe.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a warrant was out for Mohamed’s arrest.
