Metro Transit to use wind power Friday for light rail trains, electric buses

In honor of Earth Day, Metro Transit says it will be using wind to power its light rail trains and electric buses Friday.

Metro Transit will be teaming up with Xcel Energy to make the temporary change for the next 24 hours.

The light rail is already emissions free, but the power company says using wind energy for both the Blue and Green lines makes it a truly sustainable transportation option.

In addition, the company says visitors to Nicollet Mall will be able to ride an electric bus for free. The bus will be serving Route 18.

Friday’s wind-powered event is available through Xcel Energy’s Windsource program, which allows customers to pay extra each month to get either some – or all – of their energy from renewable resources.
