Mayo Clinic to restore pay, reinstate furloughed workers

Mayo Clinic announced on Wednesday it will be restoring pay to all workers effective immediately and that all furloughed workers are set to return by the end of August, changes the health care provider said were "ahead of schedule."

“Because of our staff's teamwork and commitment to patients, our practice reactivation over the past eight weeks has truly exceeded expectations for revised 2020 patient volumes and financial targets,” Mayo Clinic President and CEO Dr. Gianrico Farrugia said in a statement. “In short, we are in a much better position than we anticipated, and we're very pleased to be able to restore pay and end furloughs early."

In April, Mayo Clinic said it was temporarily reducing its staffing and cutting pay while elective medical procedures were postponed. In a statement, Mayo Clinic said shutting down elective care cut out the majority of its revenue at a time when it was simultaneously making large investments in advancing COVID-19 testing and research.

The health care provider said patient volume was about 90% of normal levels by mid-June, but it's still lagging behind its original financial outlook for 2020.
