Mayo Clinic announces $49M lab expansion in Rochester

Mayo Clinic’s Rochester campus is growing.

Tuesday, Mayo Clinic announced a $49 million expansion project to increase laboratory space at its Superior Drive Support Center.

According to Mayo Clinic, the new lab space will house several clinical labs that reside in the Hilton Building. By moving them to Superior Drive Support Center, Mayo says it will allow the labs to expand and take advantage of more modern facilities.

Other parts of the expansion include:

  • New lab space for five clinical testing labs
  • New lab space for Mayo Clinic Biopharma Diagnostics
  • An expanded and updated cafeteria for laboratory staff
  • New lab support staff spaces at Superior Drive Support Center

Additionally, the project will help Mayo’s goal to provide diagnostics to patients across the U.S. and abroad.

“Laboratory diagnostics and interpretations are front and center when it comes to the patient journey,” William Morice II, president of Mayo Clinic Laboratories, said in a statement. “The COVID-19 pandemic shined a light on the importance diagnostic testing plays within the overall health care system, and we are committed to expanding our testing to meet the needs of patients we serve at Mayo Clinic and through Mayo Clinic Laboratories.”

Construction on the project has already started and will continue through 2025, according to Mayo Clinic.

Mayo has previously announced enhancement projects at its campuses in Florida and La Crosse, Wisconsin.
