Man sentenced to 30 years in prison in fatal St. Paul shooting

A man charged in connection to a shooting in St. Paul’s West Side neighborhood that left one man dead and a 4-year-old injured last year was sentenced Wednesday.

Court records show 22-year-old Jeremy Carpenter was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years (360 months) at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility. He was given credit for 260 days served.

He previously pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder.

Man charged in connection to St. Paul shooting that left 1 dead, injured 4-year-old

According to a criminal complaint, police were called to the 400 block of Wabasha Street in St. Paul just after 5 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2019, on the report of gunshots and a car that had flipped upside down. When officers arrived, they found a man in the Jeep who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The man’s 4-year-old child also suffered a gunshot wound to his foot.

The victim – identified as Jeriko Boykin, Sr. – was taken to Regions Hospital, where he later died. The child was treated and survived his injury.

By interviewing witnesses, police were able to identify the suspect vehicle involved in the shooting. A week later, St. Paul police received a tip from the Minneapolis Police Department that officers had stopped the vehicle on Oct. 7. Officers then spoke with the owner of the car who said her boyfriend had taken the vehicle to the Twin Cities on Oct. 1 and returned on Oct. 8.

On Oct. 22, officers stopped a vehicle for an equipment malfunction and found Carpenter in the backseat of the vehicle.
