Man pleads guilty to assault in hit-and-run that injured Edina teen
The man charged in connection to a hit-and-run that injured a teenager in Edina in January has pleaded guilty to assault.
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said Carlton Troutman, of Flint, Michigan, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to a criminal complaint, at about 8 a.m. on Jan. 23, Troutman took his friend’s car, along with two other passengers, and began driving aggressively. Around 8:10 a.m., the vehicle struck 17-year-old Kyla Avant while she was boarding a school bus at France and Halifax avenues in Edina.

Police said Troutman was driving the car around the bus on the right shoulder of the road, partially on the sidewalk, when he struck Avant. According to a criminal complaint, the student forcefully hit the windshield and was thrown 50 feet as Troutman sped away from the site of the crash.

Avant was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Troutman was arrested in Michigan on March 13 and brought back to Minnesota on March 26.
Troutman’s sentencing is set for Aug. 7.
