Man leads police on pursuit after assault of family member in Wabasha County

A man with an active warrant for his arrest led police on a pursuit after police say he assaulted a family member in Red Wing.

According to the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday at about 11:25 p.m., the Red Wing Police Department said they had probable cause to arrest a man that had allegedly assaulted a family member in the city. Authorities stated the man attempted to discharge two rounds from a 9 mm handgun inside that residence. The man had fled the residence in a white Dodge pickup truck.

According to police, the man had an active warrant out for his arrest in the state of Washington and reportedly has made past threats of shooting law enforcement.

At 11:27 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at the end of the 911 caller’s driveway, located east of Mazeppa. The caller said they heard numerous gunshots in the area. The suspicious vehicle matched the description Red Wing police gave the sheriff’s office. When officers approached the vehicle, it fled at a high rate of speed, leading police on a pursuit.

The vehicle ultimately crashed into a tree line in Mazeppa, where the suspect ran from the vehicle.

After a perimeter was set up by multiple law enforcement agencies and the Minnesota State Patrol’s helicopter, the suspect was eventually located and apprehended. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries suffered during the arrest involving a K-9. A handgun was also recovered at the scene, along with spent shell casings.

The incident is under investigation.
