Man in custody in connection to Scott County pursuit where officers fired weapons

A Willmar man is in custody in connection to a high-speed pursuit where officers later fired their weapons, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The BCA said 19-year-old John Paul Smith has been booked in the Scott County Jail for probable cause fleeing a peace officer. 

According to the BCA, Smith was driving approximately 100 mph on Interstate 494 near Dodd Road Saturday when he passed a Minnesota State Patrol trooper. 

Law enforcement officers pursued Smith through a number of cities. Smith later crashed his vehicle in Shakopee. 

The BCA said during foot pursuit following the crash, two Burnsville police officers fired their weapons. No one was struck by the gunfire. 
Smith was later found and taken into custody. 

The BCA identified the two police officers as Sgt. Steve Stoler and Officer Taylor Jacobs. Both officers are on standard administrative leave. 

Portions of the incident were captured on squad and body cameras. The BCA is investigating the incident.
