Man convicted of murder for 2020 South St. Paul shooting

A Newport man was convicted Tuesday in connection to a shooting that killed one person and injured another last year in South St. Paul.

Court records show a jury found 35-year-old Jerome Deshawn Misters guilty of one count each of second-degree murder with intent and attempted second-degree murder.

According to a criminal complaint, around 4 a.m. on Aug. 17, police responded to a report of a shooting on the 600 block of 17th Avenue North found two men who had been shot. One of the victims, Matthew Perkins, was later pronounced dead.

A witness told investigators that Misters had gotten into an argument with Perkins over the phone. When Perkins and the other victim arrived a the house, Misters ran outside.

The woman said as she was still in the house, she heard three gunshots.

The complaint says, "She looked down the street and observed Misters standing over Perkins and shooting him in what the officer interpreted as execution style."

Misters’ sentencing has been set for Sept. 15.
