Man charged in connection with fatal Brooklyn Center hit-and-run crash
A man accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian with his car last week in Brooklyn Center has been charged with a felony, court records show.
According to a criminal complaint, officers responded to a hit-and-run crash the night of Sept. 19 on the 6600 block of Dupont Avenue North. There, they found a man lying in the road who was already dead.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise before seeing a Chevrolet Impala that was leaking fluid leave the scene, the complaint states. Officers followed the trail of leaked fluid to the Travelodge less than a mile away. Surveillance footage showed the driver examining the Impala and even checking underneath.
A person seen speaking to the driver outside the hotel picked him out as 20-year-old Monroe Curtis Edwards. The suspect’s mother also confirmed Edwards drives an Impala, the complaint states.
Later, the Impala is shown on video briefly returning to the site of the crash as emergency vehicles with flashing lights are at the scene.
A witness at the crash scene told police she saw a man lying in the street, so she pulled over and called her husband. While she was on the phone, she saw a car speed down Dupont Avenue and run the man over.
The driver pulled over and asked the woman, “What was that?” She told him it was a person, to which he replied, “No, it was a bag,” according to the complaint. The witness reiterated that it was a person and the man drove off.
The Impala was found on Sept. 20 at Edwards’ mother’s house. There was blood and “possible body tissue” on the car’s undercarriage. Officers questioned Edwards, who said he had run over a “speed bump” and that he didn’t know there was a person in the street.
Edwards was charged via warrant on one count of criminal vehicular homicide. His whereabouts were unknown at the time of the filing, and jail records indicate he is not currently in custody.
Court records show Edwards is on probation for two felony cases in which he fled from police in a vehicle.
