Man charged in connection to shooting at north Minneapolis home

A 23-year-old man faces charges after authorities say he shot an acquaintance at his residence in north Minneapolis Friday.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, 23-year-old Travis Leonard faces one count of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of 23-year-old Dylan Lattery.

A criminal complaint says police were called just before 11 p.m. Friday on the report of a shooting. Leonard, the caller, told police he shot someone that he claimed had broken into his house.

When police arrived, they found the victim wearing a black hoodie, a mask and gloves. Police say the was also holding a hatchet.

Leonard told officers that Lattery had broken into his house and was holding a hatchet. According to the complaint, Leonard said he fought with Lattery until he was able to break away and grab a gun and shoot him.

The complaint says Leonard’s wife gave a conflicting statement. When he was asked about the discrepancies, Leonard said that he knew Lattery.

According to the complaint, both Leonard and his wife told police that Lattery had asked that his life be ended after he was first shot. Leonard then shot him in the back of the head, the complaint says.

After Leonard shot Lattery, he placed the hatched back in the victim’s hand to make it look like he was still a threat.
