Kids find bag of meth outside Pine County elementary school

Students at an elementary school in Pine County on Tuesday found a bag of drugs near the school.

The Pine County Sheriff's Office said Pine City Elementary School requested a school resource officer to respond at about 11:35 a.m. after students found what appeared to be drugs.

The deputy learned some sixth-graders found a baggie with a crystal material in it near the outside of the school.

The students immediately told a teacher and law enforcement was called. The sheriff's office said the material in the bag turned out to be meth.

According to the sheriff's office, staff helped students who came in contact with the baggie in washing their hands. The department also asked parents to remind their children to not pick up items that may pose a safety concern and to always tell an adult if they do.

It's unclear who left the drugs where they were found, the sheriff's office said.
