Opening statements are expected to begin Monday, July 11 in the trial of a man accused of shooting and killing a youth baseball coach after a jury was seated Thursday.

As previously reported, the jury selection process began last week for the trial of Jamal Smith.

Smith is charged with first- and second-degree murder for allegedly shooting 56-year-old Jay Boughton on Highway 169 in Plymouth last July.

Prosecutors believe some sort of traffic altercation may have led to the shooting.

Smith’s defense team claims a passenger in Smith’s vehicle fired the fatal shot.
