Judge rules Minneapolis, St. Paul landlords not required to give tenants voter registration information
Landlords in Minneapolis and St. Paul don't have to give tenants information on how to register to vote, a federal judge ruled Monday.
U.S. District Judge Wilhelmina M. Wright said she recognized the cities' "laudable goal of encouraging participation in such a fundamental practice of our democracy as voting," but said it was unconstitutional to compel speech.
A spokesperson for the city of Minneapolis told KSTP Tuesday, "The City is exploring its appeal options at this point."
St. Paul's obligation to inform ordinance was enacted in 2018 while Minneapolis' was enacted in 2016. The ordinances were challenged by the Minnesota Voters Alliance.
