Injured Waseca officer has 'longest assisted walk to date,' trach removed

Injured Waseca police officer Arik Matson continues to progress and reached a couple more milestones this week, according to a CaringBridge update Friday.

The update says Matson has been working with his physical therapists to get up and walking, and on Thursday had his "longest assisted walk to date – almost 50 feet!" The post noted he's still working on balance and strength, too, but is starting to be able to move his left arm and leg more.

Matson's tracheostomy tube was also removed this week, and the update says his voice is getting stronger and he's able to speak more clearly at times. He also now gets to enjoy more of his favorite foods, such as pizza and roast beef.

However, as he progresses, therapy is getting more intense, which also requires more recovery time, the post said. Matson's family thanked everyone for their continued prayers and good vibes, saying, "they're working!"

Matson was shot in the head while responding to a suspicious person report early last month. Tyler Janovsky, 37, was charged with three counts of first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer in connection with the incident.
