House, dog hit by gunshots in St. Paul; police investigating

Authorities say a dog was injured after gunshots were fired Tuesday morning in St. Paul.

St. Paul Police said officers responded to a report of shots fired on Virginia Street, not far from West Cottage Avenue, just after 2 a.m.

Upon arriving, officers were told a house had been shot at around a dozen times and a dog inside the house had been injured.

The family dog, named Athena, was hit in the right rear leg and taken to an animal hospital for treatment. The 4-year-old Husky is expected to fully recover.

The department says officers found a 9 mm casing and bullet fragments near the home, and the victims reported hearing a vehicle drive away from the scene, but weren’t able to give a vehicle description.

The investigation remains active.

As of this time, police don’t know why the shooting happened.

No other injuries were immediately reported.
