Hopkins woman sentenced to year in jail for swindling vulnerable victims out of thousands
A Hopkins woman was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to swindling two people out of thousands of dollars.
Prosecutors say Cynthia Evans — who said she was a psychic and had a storefront on Main Street — used “psychic readings” to supposedly help victims “lift curses” and take “spiritual journeys.”
As previously reported, court documents allege Evans told one victim who had mental health and development disorders to buy a $30,000 Rolex watch, which costs much more than the person could afford, to be cured.
Evans pleaded guilty to two counts of theft by swindle.
A judge sentenced her to one year in jail. She will also have to pay more than $136,000 in restitution and spend five years on probation.
During the hearing, Evans apologized for her actions, saying she no longer works as a psychic and has turned her life around.
