Group files new lawsuit, seeking repeal of youth sport mask mandate

A new lawsuit is being filed Thursday by a group of parents, coaches, referees and athletes, requesting Gov. Tim Walz repeal a mask mandate for youth sports.

Let Them Play MN announced it would withdraw its original lawsuit to file this new lawsuit.

Let Them Play MN previously sued Walz in December, however, a judge denied that case and upheld the governor’s ability to put organized sports on hold during the pandemic.

The lawsuit being filed Thursday, according to the group, seeks to expand the challenge to Walz’s decision to require masks be worn by those involved in youth sports.

In terms of youth and adult sports, practices began Jan. 4 and games are set to begin Jan. 14 with spectators expected to follow indoor venue guidelines, according to new guidance announced by the governor’s office Wednesday.
