George Washington, Pioneers statues vandalized in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis Park Police says the Park and Recreation Board was notified on Thursday that two statues in city parks were damaged.

According to park police, the George Washington statue located in Washburn Fair Oaks Park was graffitied and toppled. Additionally, the Pioneers statue located in BF Nelson Park was graffitied. Both incidents are being addressed by maintenance crews.

"No thanks," "land back," and "no more excuses" were spray-painted on the George Washington statue.

The park and recreation board has heard from community members about the content and subject matter of the Pioneers statue. The agency is working together with the community to address and respond using a racial equity lens to determine the next steps.

This spring, a sign was placed near the statue stating this information and inviting people to share their thoughts or be part of framing new directions.

There are no suspects at this time.
