Former supervisor at Fortune Bay Casino pleads guilty to embezzling $300K

A former Fortune Bay Casino supervisor has pleaded guilty to embezzlement and theft of tribal funds.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 32-year-old Jennifer Lynn Boutto, of Orr, entered her guilty plea on Tuesday morning.

Boutto began working as a reservationist at the casino, which is owned and operated by the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, in 2008, according to her guilty plea. She later was promoted to front desk supervisor, which allowed her to issue cash refunds without direct supervision.

Between January 2013 and October 2019, Boutto used her position to steal money by issuing false cash refunds against the invoices of previous Fortune Bay customers, the attorney’s office said. She’d then access the casino’s vault and retrieve the falsely refunded amount.

In total, the attorney’s office said Boutto executed the scheme 2,994 times, stealing a total of $315,739.87.

Her sentencing date will be scheduled at a later time.
