Fight, ‘external threat’ lead to lockdown at Osseo school

Osseo Middle School went into lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a fight began.

A letter from the school’s principal, Brian Chance, to families said the lockdown was due to “a physical altercation that began in the building, but quickly moved outside because of an additional external threat.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what that additional external threat was.

The school went into lockdown for around 50 minutes and contacted law enforcement. During the shelter-in-place, students were able to continue their normal activities but nobody was allowed in or out of the building, the school said.

Students were dismissed at 2:40 p.m., according to Chance.

Police haven’t yet released any details regarding the incident.

Below is Chance’s full letter to families.

Osseo Middle School families,

I wanted to let you know that our school was in a lockdown for approximately 50 minutes this afternoon because of a physical altercation that began in the building, but quickly moved outside because of an additional external threat. Our school immediately contacted law enforcement, who were able to help resolve the situation. No one was allowed into or out of the building during the lockdown.

School switched to a shelter-in-place for the remainder of the day. Doors remained locked and students were able to go about their normal school activities.

Dismissal will occur as planned this afternoon at 2:40 p.m. Parents and caregivers picking up students may notice an increased police presence.

A big thank you goes out to our Osseo Middle School community for their support and cooperation.

Please know that timely communication is important to our school. Information is shared with parents and caregivers as soon as accurate details can be confirmed. If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.
