DVS to reopen 7 driver exam stations this month, all 93 by end of January

Minnesotans will soon have more options to take a driver’s license knowledge or road test.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DPS-DVS) said Monday that seven exam stations are set to reopen this month.

DVS consolidated exam stations during the pandemic, keeping just 15 open. The department is now working to have 43 open by the end of the year and the remaining 50 open by the end of January.

Two locations — Gaylord and New Ulm — have already reopened. Stations in St. Peter (Nov. 9), Thief River Falls (Nov. 15), Glencoe (Nov. 17), Red Wing (Nov. 17) and Hutchinson (Nov. 18) are set to reopen in the next two weeks.

After the legislature provided funding to reopen the exam stations earlier this year, DVS officials report they have been planning, negotiating leases and working to hire employees. The department will open exam stations earlier than planned if a lease and appropriate staffing are in place.
