DNR: Eagle chick dies after flying into power line

An eagle chick died Friday after flying into a power line, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource says.

According to the DNR, the chick, known as E1, was found dead and hanging from a power structure near the nest.

Officials determined E1 wasn’t electrocuted but appears to have hit the line and likely died on impact sometime during the day Friday. The DNR said it’s not uncommon for eagles to perish that way.

The DNR said the first year of an eagle’s life, particularly after fledging, is the most dangerous. During that time, the mortality rate of eagle chicks is greater than 50%.

The eagle chick known as E2 continues to thrive, according to the DNR, and continues to visit the nest.
