Crews contain Hassel Lake wildfire within BWCAW
Friday, authorities have contained a Hassel Lake wildfire that started last week.
Hassel Lake is about 10 miles northeast of Tower, within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
Fire crews have achieved a line around the perimeter of the fire to keep it from spreading, keeping it 100% contained, according to Hubbard Broadcasting sister station WDIO-TV.
The Forest Service says recent precipitation and higher humidity levels helped suppress the fire. Firefighters planned to patrol the estimated 21-acre fire one more time Friday to make sure that the conditions do not change.
This fire follows crew efforts to contain another wildfire believed to have been started by a lightning strike mid-May in the BWCAW.
Firefighters set up hose lines and aircraft dropped water on that fire.
