Company operating Uptown Theatre evicted after failure to pay rent, expenses

The company operating an iconic movie theater in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis is being evicted for failure to pay a year’s worth of rent and operating expenses.

Lagoon Partners, LLC, filed an eviction notice against Landmark Theatres, noting in a complaint that the company owes about $340,245 in rent and oprating expenses for the Uptown Theatre from April 2020 through May 2021.

According to court documents, after not receiving payment, Lagoon Partners sent a written notice on May 4 outlining the rent owed plus a 10-day window for Landmark Theatres to make the payment. Landmark Theatres, according to the court filings, "failed or refused to cure the default" following that notice.

A district court order now requires Landmark Theatres to vacate the property this week. A settlement filing outlining the eviction date was also signed last week.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has reached out to the attorney representing Lagoon Partners, as well as to Landmark Theatres, for comment.

Edina Theatre, also operated by Landmark Theatres, announced it would not reopen after closing due to the pandemic.

At the time, building owner Suzanne Haugland told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she was talking to many movie companies about taking over the space but said it’s a "tough sell" during the pandemic.
