Child in ICU after barge crashes into boat near Red Wing

Update: The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office says that a five-year-old boy is in the Mayo Rochester Pediatric ICU following the accident.

A crash between a boat and a barge Friday evening near Red Wing resulted in several people being rescued and one child transported by ambulance.

According to the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, emergency officials received a call shortly before 6 p.m. about a boat accident involving a barge.

Responders found one adult male and four children in the water — all four children were wearing life jackets.

The adult male and three of the children were treated and released on-site, but the fourth child was transported to a nearby hospital in unknown condition after life-saving measures were performed, according to law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office says no alcohol was involved. Preliminary information indicates the boat was having mechanical issues and was unable to move out of the barge’s path.

The incident is under investigation, the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office says.
