Cherry to rejoin Spoonbridge in Minneapolis Sculpture Garden this month

The cherry that is part of the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is returning this month from its trip to New York for a touch-up.

Walker Art Center representatives stated Monday the freshly restored and repainted cherry will be returned to the sculpture on Feb. 18.

The 1,200-pound aluminum cherry was unbolted and separated from the Spoonbridge base in November, and went to Fine Art Finishes in New York for its touch-up.

Walker Art Center representatives said that in order to maintain its glossy red color, the cherry requires a touch-up every 10 years or so.

The Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture has been on view at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden since 1988 and was last restored in 2009.
