Chemical explosion injures 1 at the University of Minnesota

A chemical explosion injured a student at the University of Minnesota Friday.

According to the university, a chemical explosion occurred in Smith Hall at around 4 p.m. Friday. The University of Minnesota Police Department, Minneapolis Fire Department, EMS and the university’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety responded to the scene.

The student was working in a lab when the explosion occurred. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The lab remains closed for cleaning.
