Charges: Inmate knocked out corrections officer, continued assault
A man serving a prison sentence in connection to a homicide is now charged with assaulting a corrections officer, causing serious injuries.
Danny Aleck Bowie, Jr., is charged with third-degree and fourth-degree assault.
A criminal complaint states that it happened on Feb. 19 at the Stillwater Correctional Facility.
As Bowie was using the phone, two corrections officers searched his cell.
Afterward, the officers asked Bowie to “cuff up” but he ignored them, pushed and punched one in the face, which knocked that officer into the second officer. Bowie then allegedly punched the first corrections officer 22 times, 15 of which were after the officer had lost consciousness, the complaint states.
That officer suffered a closed fracture of the nasal bone, cuts that required stitches to close and an abrasion to the left cornea.
A month later, the officer reported ongoing back and neck issues, anxiety, mood swings and memory loss, the complaint states.
Bowie was transferred to the Oak Park Heights prison. While he’s currently set to be released in 2031, the assault charge could add up to five years to that sentence, if convicted.
