Body found at Pike Island in Mississippi River

A body was found in water near Pike Island, an island in the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Friday evening.

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office confirmed to KSTP that a body was found Friday evening.

The St. Paul Fire Department said crews were called to the scene at about 6:39 p.m. and a boat crew recovered the body a short time later.

A medical examiner is expected to identify the body at a later time.

Authorities said it's possible the body is a that of a missing swimmer who went underwater in the Mississippi River earlier this week. A search was unsuccessful at the time. However, the identity won't be known until the medical examiner makes a positive identification.
