Bemidji man identified as suspect in 2021 killing of Wisconsin woman

Authorities say they have identified a suspect in the 2021 killing of a Stone Lake, Wisconsin, woman.

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office said it is asking the county district attorney to charge Manly McDermott, 29, of Bemidji with first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting death of 42-year-old Cary Lynne Elkin.

Formal charges against McDermott have yet to be filed as of Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff’s deputies found Elkin’s body the morning of April 2, 2021, in a home on Hungry Lake Lane in the Town of Sand Lake. She had been shot several times.

Investigators were able to link evidence from search warrants, interviews and forensic analysis to McDermott, who is currently serving a prison sentence at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Moose Lake for an unrelated firearms conviction.
