Authorities urge caution after truck goes through ice on Lake Hanska

Authorities are reminding people to be cautious if you're going on the ice after a pickup truck fell through on Lake Hanska Monday afternoon.

According to the Brown County Sheriff's Office, at 1:59 p.m. they received a report of a pickup truck that had gone through the ice on Lake Hanska near the Godahl landing.

Both passengers were able to get out of the vehicle with no injuries.

The sheriff's office said the pickup truck is still partially submerged in the lake, but arrangements are being made to recover it.

DNR stresses safety precautions before venturing on ice

Authorities want to remind others who are using the lakes and river in the winter months that while no ice is 100% perfect to please use caution anytime when venturing onto the lake or river ice.

They also asked people to refrain from driving on ice whenever possible, but if you must drive a vehicle onto the ice, you're reminded to keep the windows down and be prepared to leave it in a hurry.

The DNR offers the following guidelines for new clear ice:

• Four inches for ice fishing or other activities on foot.
• Five inches for snowmobile or ATV.
• Eight to 12 inches for a car or small pickup.
• Twelve to 15 inches for a medium truck.

The sheriff's office also said to tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
