Alcohol believed to be a factor in fatal Isanti County crash

Authorities say one person is dead and another is in serious condition following a crash late Tuesday night.

According to the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the area of Palm Street Northwest and 326th Avenue Northwest in Springvale Township shortly after 9:15 p.m. after multiple reports of a crash were made.

Multiple departments responded to the scene, including a LifeLink helicopter.

The initial investigation shows a northbound pickup truck swerved into the other lane and swiped a Dodge Stratus, causing the Stratus to crash into a ditch, according to the sheriff’s office.

No one inside the Stratus was injured, the sheriff’s office says.

However, authorities add the truck continued north in the southbound lane and eventually hit a Hyundai. Both of the vehicles then went into a ditch.

Authorities say the 47-year-old Ham Lake man who was driving the Hyundai died at the scene.

Meanwhile, a 39-year-old Cambridge man was identified as the pickup truck’s driver. He was taken to Cambridge Medical Center and allegedly showed signs of alcohol consumption. He is listed as being in serious condition.

According to the sheriff’s office, a container with alcohol inside of it and a handgun were found at the scene, and both are believed to be associated with the truck driver.

The crash is still being investigated.
