The extreme cold snap Minnesota is experiencing right now is not only hard on Minnesotans, but it also puts a strain on their homes.
The furnace went out at a home in North Saint Paul. The owners were on vacation and pipes burst, causing the toilet and bathtub to turn in blocks of ice.

The $50,000 in damage could have been prevented with a WiFi thermostat.
"If you’re going to leave town, I mean, just get a WiFi thermostat," John McQuillan with McQuillan Bros said. "The technology is there. It hooks up to your phone. It shoots you a text when your house drops below a certain temperature."
A WiFi thermostat can cost from around $100 to $1,000.
