9-year-old boy dead after ATV crash in Dakota County

A 9-year-old boy has died following an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash in Dakota County Tuesday.

According to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office, the sheriff's office responded to a single ATV crash in Randolph at 6:29 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies arrived in less than five minutes and provided lifesaving efforts along with an off-duty nurse and a firefighter, but the boy died at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

The department said the boy was operating a smaller ATV on dirt piles on an open lot near his home when it rolled and landed on top of him. Nobody saw the accident happen, and a passerby was the one who found the boy unresponsive and called authorities for help.

The sheriff's office identified the boy as Carter Nicolai. A GoFundMe has been set up for Nicolai and can be found here.
