82-year-old man identified in fatal Pine County crash

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has identified the driver in a fatal one-vehicle crash Sunday night in rural Pine County.

According to a Minnesota State Patrol crash report, around 6:51 p.m. Sunday, a Chevy Cruze was headed southbound on Interstate 35 near mile marker 179 in Mission Creek Township when the car left the road and struck a tree.

The driver, who was identified as Donald Anthony Welter, 82, of Pine City, was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner said he died of multiple blunt force injuries.

It is unknown whether alcohol was involved in the crash, according to the State Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.
