40-year-old woman dies in ATV crash in Carlton County
A 40-year-old woman died after an ATV crash Saturday morning in northeast Minnesota.
According to the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 11:40 a.m. near County Road 139 and County Road 6 in Barnum Township.
The crash report stated that the female victim was riding in a group of ATVs headed southbound on County Road 139. According to an initial investigation, the group was approaching the intersection at County Road 6, and dry conditions caused the ATVs to stir up a large amount of dust on the gravel road.
According to the sheriff’s office, the dust might have limited the victim’s visibility while driving and caused her not to see the approaching intersection.
When the victim attempted to stop, she lost control of the ATV, and it rolled on top of her.
She was airlifted to a hospital in Duluth, where she later died. Her identity is being withheld pending family notification.
The victim was wearing a helmet, and alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff’s office stated.
