5 ON YOUR SIDE: The Lone Star tick is spreading

The lone star tick's most distinctive feature is its starlike white splotch, found on adult females.

The state’s first Lone Star tick of the year was found in Hennepin County, according to the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District.

The tick was found during a drag west of Rogers.

Though it is rare in Minnesota, the tick can cause alpha-gal syndrome, which makes the human host allergic to red meat.
