1 dead, 1 injured in 2-vehicle crash in Polk County

Two vehicles were involved in a fatal crash Friday morning in Polk County.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says at about 7 a.m., the sheriff’s department’s dispatch center received a call reporting a two-vehicle crash on County Road F near 50th Avenue in the Town of Black Brook.

When officers and first responder units arrived, they learned a gray 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on County Road F, just north of 50th Avenue. The Jeep struck two deer, according to police. As the vehicle veered, the driver lost control and eventually overturned. The vehicle continued to roll over several times as it continued to the north.

At that time, a 1982 Mazda Rx7 was traveling southbound, approaching the Jeep. The Jeep continued to roll and entered the southbound travel lane, eventually hitting and rolling over the top of the Mazda. The vehicle continued a short distance in its initial travel direction before coming to a stop on the road.

The driver of the Jeep sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

The driver of the Mazda was transported by ambulance to Amery Regional Medical Center and then was airlifted to Regions Hospital, a news release stated. The injuries suffered by the Mazda’s driver were unclear.

The crash is under investigation. The name of the victims involved will be released at a later time.
