Mural of Lizzo’s forthcoming album cover commissioned, on display locally all summer
As musical artist Lizzo celebrates her birthday Wednesday, Xcel Energy Center announced a special mural in her honor.
Melissa Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, hails from Texas but moved to the Twin Cities in 2011 where she lived and launched her recording career before heading to Los Angeles eight years later.
While in Minneapolis, Lizzo was a part of a few musical groups in the Twin Cities and recorded and released two solo albums as a hip-hop artist, “Lizzobangers” and “Big Grrrl Small World.”
Lizzo has since become a well-known name in the pop world due to hits like “Truth Hurts” and “Juice.” On Monday, the singer and flutist announced an upcoming arena tour in support of her forthcoming album, “Special,” which is her first tour of that magnitude.
Xcel Energy Center and Live Nation commissioned a special mural painted by local artist Reggie LeFlore that features the album art for “Special.” Lizzo fans will be able to see the mural at Xcel Energy Center during the Minnesota Wild games on April 28 and 29. The 8-by-10-foot mural will also be displayed at Lush on May 7 and at a variety of unannounced events throughout the summer and into the fall until she plays at Xcel Energy Center on Oct. 11. Tickets for the concert go on sale to the public on Friday.
