Open enrollment begins for MNsure

Open enrollment has begun for MNsure, the health insurance marketplace for Minnesota.

MNsure CEO Nate Clark said the COVID-19 pandemic is making health insurance more important than ever.

"We know that understanding insurance can be complicated," Clark said. "There’s no better time than to be covered than now when we’re in a public health emergency."

In 2010, when the Affordable Care Act came into law, some of the federal funding there helped Minnesota finance its health care system for the public.

"This year, households are receiving credits that average about $5,200 a year," said Clark.

But with the United States Supreme Court set to decide on the future of the Affordable Care Act, what does that mean for Minnesotans who need affordable health insurance?

"We’re aware of the lawsuit, and I think we share the same kinds of concerns that everyone else does. And I think the concern that we have though is that we want folks to understand that even though it’s confusing, even though it’s not clear what might happen, the most important thing to keep in mind is that the ACA is the law of the land, MNsure is here, and we are here to help you with the coverage efforts that you need," Clark said.

While there’s no telling what will come once the Supreme Court decides on the Affordable Care Act, for Minnesotans who want a plan from MNsure, it’s important to enroll early to get coverage for next year.

The deadline to sign up for a plan through MNsure is Dec. 22.
