Twin Cities nurse comes out of retirement to help during COVID-19 pandemic

Sixty-eight-year-old Marty Von Drasek will laughingly tell you she might not be cut out for retirement.
"I am hoping there won’t be another pandemic and I can actually retire. I think I would have felt guilty if I didn’t do something to help," she said.
She retired from her nursing career at M Health Fairview last summer but then got lured back for a temporary project in the fall.
In December, she tried to retire again, but then the pandemic hit. Once again, she answered the call from her former boss at M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood.

"She said they needed help and asked if I would come out of retirement again. Health care-wise, this is the most significant thing I’ve encountered," said Von Drasek.
Today, Von Drasek works in the Employee Health Department at St. John’s, the department that takes care of all the other doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital. She said during her long career, one thing has not changed.
"I just absolutely love being a nurse. This is my 45th year, it’s a calling," she said.
Von Drasek said she will stay on at least through the fall and hopefully give retirement another try in 2021.
